SORRY DAY 2008
Welcome to all members of the Stolen Generations and their families, friends and supporters.
The NSW Sorry Day Committee thanks you for joining us on this day. We respectfully acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land, of Elders past and present of the Gadigal people of the Eora nation and we thank them for allowing us to hold our Sorry Day commemorations on their land.
The Sorry Day Commemorative March will conclude in First Fleet Park at Circular Quay. Given the limited amount of space available in the park, we are asking for your patience and understanding if the park fills up and there is not enough space for you.
Should this occur, we are drawing your attention to the other attractions and spaces around where people can gather and enjoy the day.
These include:
NSW State Records exhibition
In Living Memory - an exhibition of surviving photographs from the records of the NSW Aborigines Welfare Board, from 1919 to 1966.
The exhibition team at State Records Gallery hopes to create a respectful exhibition experience that honours these photographs as a record of the past that is still very much alive today.
The photos were taken within living memory and are being exhibited in loving memory. *NSW State Records is located directly across George Street from First Fleet Park * The exhibition contains images of some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have passed away.
Royal Botanic Gardens
There is plenty of room to sit and relax with your group in the Botanic Gardens. Take a picnic or food and drinks can be bought on the way to the Gardens from Circular Quay so you can have a rest after the March and try First Fleet Park again later in the day.
If you like, while you are in the Gardens you can visit the permanent exhibition called Cadi Jam Ora, which is a garden display that tells the story of the Gadigal people, the traditional Aboriginal owners of the Sydney city area, and features plants that originally grew on the site of the Royal Botanic Gardens.
To get to the Botanic Gardens, walk to the Sydney Opera House and through the gates on the opposite side of the forecourt.
Respect
All are invited and welcome to join with us in commemorating members of the Stolen Generations in the March and we know that you will show respect throughout the day. If the park is full at Circular Quay, please remember the reason that we have come together and ensure that the Elders and Stolen Generationsmembers and their families have the space to gather and be together. It is their special day.
We thank you for your support.
NSW Sorry Day Committee.
